Blepharospasm

A blepharospasm is the involuntary blinking or spasms in the muscles around the eye. While the actual cause of a blepharospasm is unknown, it is believed that heredity may play a role in some cases. The spasms cause uncontrolled and excessive blinking, eye twitching, or even the closing of your eyelid. This can make tasks such as working at the computer, reading or driving very difficult.

The onset of symptoms for blepharospasm usually happens very suddenly. It may start with increased blinking or eye irritation that is forced and uncontrollable. It will then increase in frequency. Patients suffering from this condition may also notice increased fatigue and sensitivity to light. Some patients may even experience facial twitching.
